Work Placement at Milkbar Digital

May 16, 2017

As part of my Bachelor of Media studies at The University of Adelaide, I recently completed a placement at Milkbar Digital as my degree requires students to gain valuable workplace experience in a field of media that interested them the most. For me this was social media. With graduation looming closer and my eventual move to Melbourne, I decided to challenge myself and do my placement interstate to truly test my limits, both personally and professionally. Having been accepted to be a temporary member of the Milkbar Digital team, I was nothing but nervous and excited to start.

Over the course of ten days, I was responsible for sourcing, copywriting and scheduling and planning content posts for clients, adhering to a client’s advertising budget across Facebook and Instagram, writing a blog post regarding colour and branding, as well as creating a new Facebook cover photo for one of their clients. On top of this, I was also able to participate in various campaign shoots for new and original content. Over the course of my placement I gained so much valuable knowledge and experience about social media – particularly about how much effort really goes into planning and sourcing content for a client.

Something I certainly didn’t expect, yet was fortunate enough, was to be a part of a social media campaign for Red Island Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Taking place on the beautiful Phillip Island, we were told to look like a group of friends having fun at the beach and enjoying food and a picnic; a rather daunting task when it’s only your second day of placement. However as anyone who has met or had the pleasure to have worked with Sam and the Milkbar Digital team would know, they were nothing but kind and welcoming. This was a great bonding experience for me and in the end, we all had so much fun and were able to capture some great content for the client.

I am so thankful for the experience and opportunity Milkbar Digital has given me and I can’t think of a more fitting end to my degree. The team were so welcoming and helpful and kind enough to let me be part of their family. I will greatly miss working with everyone there however, I am excited to see where my future in social media will take me.
