An Internship at Milkbar Digital

Diary of an Intern

Written by Tommy Paccagnan

As I saw myself approaching the end of my Bachelor of Business Marketing degree at La Trobe University, I began to realise the importance of undertaking an internship to gain some hands-on, real-world experience – and recently got the pleasure to do just that with the incredible Milkbar Digital team!

How lucky I am to have completed an internship in the digital field that I shortly pursue as my profession? And what better start in the workforce than with the lovely Milkbar crew! From the get-go, everyone has been so kind and welcoming, and I’m so happy to call them not just colleagues – but friends; (please tell me you feel the same or this is just AWKWARD).

The internship itself has offered a keen insight to the Marketing, PR and digital industries. A key skill learned was scheduling for the Milkbar clients, including Goldeluck’s Doughnuts, Beats Burgers and Shou Sumiyaki to name a few! Using Photoshop to create Instagram stories for the clients, as well as community management of social media for clients was also vital experience gained at the firm. Creating the captions for content was also a fun experience that allowed me to let out my inner creative and try and make the copy as punny as possible – which, at times, may have borderline cringe-worthy (I mean, “who needs men when you can have RAMEN” is funny, right? No? Didn’t land the joke? Okay, I’m leaving anyway – your loss).

A definite highlight was being involved in several content photoshoots for the clients, where assisting in the creation of content allowed me to understand the various technical aspects involved in the process for the best content outcome. You could say a keen skill gained here was eating the content after a shoot – it was a DEFINITE perk, as well as a skill I am now efficient in for any future work (seriously, someone hire me based on my love of food, I am over-qualified). Being involved in Taste of the Week episodes furthered this particular skillset and was an absolute highlight and celebration of the amazing work Milkbar Digital does as a team.

Overall, over the course of my internship I gained a better understanding of the social media marketing landscape, and now understand the time and effort that goes into the creation and planning of content.

Seeing the complete process of how to digitally market – from the content creation, to the editing, to the scheduling, to the promotion – was equally as enjoyable as it was informative. I can honestly say I loved each phase of the process and found it to be a very interesting insight into the field. With the experience of the whole process, it has furthered my intention to continue into this area of marketing as a profession in the future. Without this practical experience, I simply would not have known if this is the area I wanted to pursue – and thanks to Milkbar, I can gladly say it is (permitting bulk food is involved).

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to undertake my first internship with Milkbar Digital, and the knowledge and skill-set it has given me is invaluable. I will severely miss working with the team (and the endless food that is constantly arriving in the office), but I’m excited to see what great things come from the agency in the future and keen to put my learnt knowledge into practice.

Thanking you so much for the opportunity Sam and the team,

Tommy
